- Deliver quality health care for veterans
- Ensure veterans receive their entitled benefits
- Improve the military awards process
As a Marine veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I fully understand the needs and sacrifices of our service members and their families. Our commitment to our military men and women does not cease when their active service to our country ends- caring for our veterans must remain a top priority in Congress. Because San Diego has such a large and active veteran population it is important that those who wore the uniform have access to quality and affordable care. It is for this reason that I strongly support efforts that will ensure adequate health care funding for our military families and retirees as well as preserve retirement benefits.
Speaking with local veterans at San Diego’s Veterans Day parade
I have sponsored the BRAVE Act, the Burial Rights for America’s Veterans’ Efforts Act of 2019, a bill that makes sure veterans are treated equally based on their service, not the circumstances at their time of death. The BRAVE Act is bipartisan legislation, with strong support, that increases the funds provided for a veteran’s burial. The bill has been endorsed by several veterans’ service organizations including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Officers Association of America, the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Disabled American Veterans. I also cosponsored the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019, that finally extends the Agent Orange presumption to Navy veterans who served on ships off the coast of Vietnam during the conflict. This decades long effort extends medical benefits and covers medical conditions related to Agent Orange exposure. This bill was signed into law in June 2019. I also cosponsored the Homeless Veterans Families Act, that ensures children of homeless vets are included in veteran coverage for temporary housing if needed.
